It's a Wonderful IMG_5507_2 letter i k letter I World!

We will use this wiki to learn about wikis! I will provide all of our class content on this wiki so that you can refer to it anytime. By the end of the course, you will be adding you own content.

What is a Wiki?

A wiki is a collaborative website which can be directly edited by anyone with access to it. Wiki software was first developed by Ward Cunningham. Wiki is a Hawaiian word for "fast". Wikipedia is the most well-known wiki, which contains over 9 million articles edited by thousands of people.

Why Wikis in Education?

There are several key features of a wiki that make it a great tool for educators:
  • A wiki is collaborative. It can be used for building and sharing information.
  • A wiki has various "permissions", meaning that we can set it to be public, protected or private
    • Public: A public wiki can be viewed by anyone and can also be edited by anyone.
    • Protected: A protected wiki can be viewed by anyone but can only be edited by members of the wiki.
    • Private: A private wiki can only be viewed or edited by members of the wiki.
  • Every version of a page is saved in the History. The organizer (you) can track changes, compare versions or revert to an older version if necessary.
  • It is easy to track student changes and revisions
  • Wikis are easily edited using a WYSIWYG text editor.
  • Files and images can be attached; all types of media can be embedded
